Price per Tonne: What Actually Drives the Number

Galvanized pipe is quoted per metric ton, so two offers for the same diameter can differ substantially once wall class, coating and end finish are specified. The five variables that move the number are:

Wall class and standard. GOST 3262 light, ordinary and reinforced walls use different strip thicknesses for the same nominal bore, so the weight per metre and the price per tonne both change. The same applies to BS 1387 Class A, B and C.

Zinc coating weight. A heavier coating class consumes more zinc per tonne of pipe. Specifying an exterior-grade coating for an indoor riser pays for zinc that is never used, and specifying a light class for a coastal installation shortens service life.

Diameter. Small bores carry proportionally more surface area and finishing cost per tonne, so the price per tonne tends to fall as diameter rises.

End finish. Plain ends are the base case; threading with couplings, sockets or grooved ends adds a finishing operation, and couplings are a separate steel item.

Volume, documentation and delivery terms. A 25 t single-size order prices differently from a consolidated container of four sizes. Certification scope, pre-shipment inspection and the Incoterm also sit inside the quotation.
