Grades, Standards and GOST Equivalents

Welded pipe is supplied to ASTM A53 Grade B, API 5L PSL1/PSL2, GB/T 3091, EN 10217/10219, GOST 10704/10705 and ASTM A252 for piling. For the Russian and EAEU market the primary references are GOST 10704 (dimensions) and GOST 10705 (technical conditions, steel grades St1-St4, 08-20). We cross-reference international grades with the GOST series in the MTC so the batch passes customs and the buyer’s quality control without additional testing. Options include black, varnished or galvanized surface, bevelled or plain ends, and external coatings (FBE, bitumen or three-layer PE) for buried water and gas pipelines. Sizes range from DN15 to DN1200, with wall thicknesses from 1.0 to 25 mm, in 6 m and 12 m lengths or cut-to-length.

Manufacturing Process

Welded steel pipe at the Tianjin plant is produced on high-frequency ERW lines for diameters from 21.3 to 660 mm, on spiral SSAW lines for diameters up to 1,220 mm, and on LSAW lines for longitudinal large-diameter pipe. On the ERW line, hot-rolled coil is progressively formed into a tube, and the longitudinal edges are heated by high-frequency induction and forged together, followed by seam annealing, sizing and straightening. Every ERW pipe is hydrostatically tested and the weld seam is verified by eddy current or ultrasonic testing. SSAW and LSAW pipes are welded with submerged arc from both sides, giving a strong double-pass weld, and are tested with full-length ultrasonic inspection and hydrostatic pressure. Depending on the standard, we also perform flattening, bend and impact tests on the weld zone. This combination of forming, welding and testing ensures that the finished pipe meets the requirements of water, gas and structural applications.

Applications

  • Water supply and drainage networks
  • Piling and foundation works
  • Structural columns and supports
  • Fencing and general construction
  • Low-pressure gas distribution

Applications in Russia and Central Asia

Welded pipe is the workhorse of water supply, drainage and construction across the region. Municipal water utilities in Russia and Kazakhstan use GOST 10704 pipe for transmission mains, distribution networks and pressure pipelines, with FBE or bitumen coating for buried service. Foundation contractors specify ASTM A252 piling pipe for driven piles in bridge, port and building projects. Structural engineers use ERW pipe for columns, trusses and supports in industrial buildings and logistics centers. The oil and gas sector uses ERW API 5L pipe for gathering lines and SSAW/LSAW pipe for large-diameter transmission and water injection lines. Because the manufacturing process is faster and the cost per tonne is lower than seamless, welded pipe is the economical choice wherever the service conditions allow a longitudinal or spiral weld.

Quality Control and Testing

Every production stage at the Sino East Steel plant is controlled under an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system. Depending on the product, each batch is tested for chemical composition and mechanical properties (yield strength, tensile strength, elongation), dimensional accuracy, surface quality and, where applicable, hydrostatic pressure, weld seam integrity, zinc coating thickness and paint adhesion. All testing is performed in our laboratory and, when the project requires, witnessed by independent inspectors from SGS, Bureau Veritas or TUV Rheinland. Each shipment is accompanied by a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) per EN 10204 3.1 with heat numbers, so every tonne can be traced back to its production date, heat and chemical analysis. This documentation is prepared in a form accepted by customs authorities in Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Belarus, and can be adapted to GOST-based reporting when the buyer’s quality department requires it.

Documents and Compliance for Russia and the EAEU

All goods are supplied with a complete export documentation set prepared for smooth customs clearance in the Russian Federation and the Eurasian Economic Union: Mill Test Certificate (MTC) per EN 10204 3.1 with heat numbers and chemical analysis, Certificate of Origin form ST-1 (which qualifies for duty-free import within the EAEU), commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading or railway consignment note. Where the project is subject to the EAEU Technical Regulations, we support the EAC certification process and provide the technical passport, test reports and conformity documentation required by the importing party. For products supplied against Russian design standards we prepare documentation referencing the relevant GOST equivalents (for example GOST 3262 for galvanized pipe, GOST 8732 for seamless pipe, GOST 30245 for hollow sections), so your quality department and the customs broker receive everything on the day the vessel or train arrives.

Logistics to Russia and Central Asia

Sea freight from Tianjin and Xingang ports to St. Petersburg, Novorossiysk, Vladivostok and the Baltic ports takes 30-45 days, with container and break-bulk options for project volumes. For Central Asia we ship container rail trains via the Dostyk and Khorgos border crossings to Almaty, Astana, Tashkent, Samarkand, Bishkek, Osh, Dushanbe and Ashgabat in 25-40 days. We quote on FOB Tianjin/Xingang, CFR, CIF, or DAP terms to your warehouse, consolidate several product lines in one container to reduce the freight cost per tonne, and agree the shipment schedule with your project calendar. A Russian-speaking sales team follows your order from specification to customs clearance, prepares the transit documentation for rail corridors, and coordinates with your forwarding agent at the destination. For regular buyers we offer scheduled programs with fixed prices for the contract period, protecting your project budget from market volatility.

Packaging and Loading

Welded pipe is packed in hexagonal bundles with steel strapping and plastic end caps, labeled with standard, grade, DN, wall and length. Diameters up to about 219 mm are containerized with a calculated stowage plan; larger diameters are shipped break-bulk or in open-top containers with lashing. Coated pipe is supplied with end caps and edge protection to protect the coating at transshipment points. The packing list, MTC per EN 10204 3.1, ST-1 certificate and invoice accompany every container, prepared for customs clearance in the destination country.

The Russian and Central Asian Market for Welded Pipe

Welded pipe volumes in the region are driven by municipal water infrastructure, construction and oil and gas. Russian cities are replacing aging water mains at an accelerating pace, and the federal programs for housing and infrastructure development support steady demand for ERW pipe. Kazakhstan’s road and railway construction uses welded piling and structural pipe, while Uzbekistan’s new industrial zones require water and gas distribution piping. The oil and gas sector adds demand for API 5L ERW and large-diameter SSAW/LSAW pipe. Domestic production covers standard sizes but not the full range, and imported welded pipe from China fills the gap in specific diameters, wall thicknesses and coating options. Sino East Steel supplies directly to water utilities’ contractors, construction companies and oilfield suppliers across the EAEU.

How to Choose the Right Welded Pipe

For water supply and drainage up to 630 mm, ERW pipe to GOST 10704 or ASTM A53 is the standard and most economical choice. For larger diameters and higher pressures, choose SSAW or LSAW with the required testing level. For buried pipelines, specify the external coating (FBE for small diameters, three-layer PE for large-diameter gas and water mains) and confirm that the coating is applied after hydrostatic testing. For foundation piling, use ASTM A252 Grades 2-3 with the required wall thickness for the driving conditions. If the pipe will be welded in the field, confirm the steel grade and carbon equivalent for weldability. Finally, decide between black, varnished or galvanized surface according to the service environment, and specify bevelled ends if the joints will be welded rather than coupled.

Why Buy Welded Pipe Direct from the Factory

With in-house ERW, SSAW and LSAW lines, Sino East Steel controls weld quality, testing and delivery time from one location. Factory-direct pricing removes trading margins, and our integrated production means we can offer coated pipe – FBE or 3PE – without the added cost and delay of outsourcing. We prepare GOST 10704/10705 cross-referenced documentation and the ST-1 certificate with every shipment, consolidate several diameters in one container, and support project schedules with fixed-price contracts. For municipal and infrastructure tenders we provide the full documentation package that local procurement departments require.
