Grades, Standards and Tempers
Tinplate is supplied to ASTM A623, EN 10202 and GB/T 2520, in steel grades MR, L and D, with tempers T1-T5 (single reduced) and DR550-DR620 (double reduced). Coating options include equal E1-E5 and differential D5.6/2.8, D8.4/5.6 coatings in bright, matte or stone finish. For the Russian market the reference is GOST 13345, and we prepare certificates cross-referencing the international specification. Applications determine the temper: T2-T3 for food cans, T4-T5 for ends and closures, DR for aerosol cans and crown caps. Sheet or coil supply, with lithographic printing surface quality on request.
Manufacturing Process
Electrolytic tinplate is produced by electroplating a thin layer of tin onto cold-rolled low-carbon steel strip: the strip is cleaned, pickled and passed through electroplating cells with tin anodes, where the tin coating is deposited in precise weights (E1-E5 equal, or differential D5.6/2.8 etc.). The coated strip is then reflowed (for bright finish) or left matte, and treated to stabilize the surface. Single-reduced (SR) and double-reduced (DR) tempers are produced by controlled rolling, giving the strength levels required for food cans, closures and ends. The production line processes thicknesses from 0.14 to 0.55 mm and widths from 700 to 1,100 mm, with precise control of coating weight and temper. Each coil is tested for coating weight, hardness, adhesion and surface quality, with the MTC per ASTM A623 or EN 10202.
Applications
- Food and beverage cans
- Aerosol and paint containers
- Crown caps and closures
- Batteries and electronic components
- Decorative tins and boxes
Applications in Packaging and Industry
Tinplate is the material of choice for metal packaging. Food can producers in Russia and Kazakhstan use ETP tinplate for vegetables, fish, meat and condensed milk cans, where the tin coating protects the product and the steel provides strength for processing (retorting). Beverage and aerosol can manufacturers use DR tinplate for lightweight, high-strength ends. Crown cap and closure producers consume bright tinplate in T4-T5 tempers. The paint, oil and chemical industries use tinplate for containers, and decorative tins, boxes and gift packaging add design-driven demand. Because tinplate packaging is infinitely recyclable and the coating is food-safe, it remains the standard for long-shelf-life food products across the region.
Quality Control and Testing
Every production stage at the Sino East Steel plant is controlled under an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system. Depending on the product, each batch is tested for chemical composition and mechanical properties (yield strength, tensile strength, elongation), dimensional accuracy, surface quality and, where applicable, hydrostatic pressure, weld seam integrity, zinc coating thickness and paint adhesion. All testing is performed in our laboratory and, when the project requires, witnessed by independent inspectors from SGS, Bureau Veritas or TUV Rheinland. Each shipment is accompanied by a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) per EN 10204 3.1 with heat numbers, so every tonne can be traced back to its production date, heat and chemical analysis. This documentation is prepared in a form accepted by customs authorities in Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Belarus, and can be adapted to GOST-based reporting when the buyer’s quality department requires it.
Documents and Compliance for Russia and the EAEU
All goods are supplied with a complete export documentation set prepared for smooth customs clearance in the Russian Federation and the Eurasian Economic Union: Mill Test Certificate (MTC) per EN 10204 3.1 with heat numbers and chemical analysis, Certificate of Origin form ST-1 (which qualifies for duty-free import within the EAEU), commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading or railway consignment note. Where the project is subject to the EAEU Technical Regulations, we support the EAC certification process and provide the technical passport, test reports and conformity documentation required by the importing party. For products supplied against Russian design standards we prepare documentation referencing the relevant GOST equivalents (for example GOST 3262 for galvanized pipe, GOST 8732 for seamless pipe, GOST 30245 for hollow sections), so your quality department and the customs broker receive everything on the day the vessel or train arrives.
Logistics to Russia and Central Asia
Sea freight from Tianjin and Xingang ports to St. Petersburg, Novorossiysk, Vladivostok and the Baltic ports takes 30-45 days, with container and break-bulk options for project volumes. For Central Asia we ship container rail trains via the Dostyk and Khorgos border crossings to Almaty, Astana, Tashkent, Samarkand, Bishkek, Osh, Dushanbe and Ashgabat in 25-40 days. We quote on FOB Tianjin/Xingang, CFR, CIF, or DAP terms to your warehouse, consolidate several product lines in one container to reduce the freight cost per tonne, and agree the shipment schedule with your project calendar. A Russian-speaking sales team follows your order from specification to customs clearance, prepares the transit documentation for rail corridors, and coordinates with your forwarding agent at the destination. For regular buyers we offer scheduled programs with fixed prices for the contract period, protecting your project budget from market volatility.
Packaging and Loading
Tinplate coils are packed on steel pallets with waterproof wrapping and steel strapping, labeled with the grade, temper, coating, dimensions and coil number. Sheets are packed in bundles with protective paper interleaving and strapped on pallets. Coils load in containers on cradles, sheets in palletized bundles. The documentation includes the MTC per EN 10204 3.1 with GOST 13345 cross-reference, ST-1 certificate, invoice and packing list, prepared for EAEU customs clearance.
The Tinplate Market in Russia and Central Asia
The Russian tinplate market serves the food canning, beverage and aerosol industries. Can manufacturers in Russia and Kazakhstan convert imported tinplate into food and beverage packaging, with demand driven by the growth of processed food and the modernization of canning lines. The crown cap and closure industry adds steady consumption of bright tinplate. Because domestic tinplate production does not cover the full range of tempers and coatings, can makers import ETP from China and other suppliers. Sino East Steel supplies tinplate coil and sheet directly to can manufacturers and packaging companies across the EAEU, with the temper and coating consistency that high-speed can lines require.
How to Choose the Right Tinplate
Select the steel grade by the product: MR for most food cans, L (low-phosphorus) for severe deep drawing, D for specialized applications. Choose the temper by the forming and service requirements: T2-T3 for easy forming (food cans), T4-T5 for stronger ends and closures, DR for lightweight high-strength aerosol cans and ends. Select the coating weight by the product’s corrosiveness: E2-E4 for most food, E5 or differential for acidic products. Choose bright finish for printed cans, matte for lithographic printing, stone for decorative products. Confirm whether the can line uses sheets or coils, and the coating weight measurement method, with your packaging engineers.
Why Buy Tinplate Direct from the Factory
Sino East Steel supplies tinplate from dedicated partner mills under our own inspection program, with certificates cross-referenced to GOST 13345 for the Russian market. Direct purchase removes trading margins, and consolidated shipments of several tempers and coatings reduce freight cost. Our team supports can makers with temper selection and coating recommendations for their product range, and regular supply programs protect packaging production schedules.
How to Order
Ordering is straightforward: (1) send your specification – standard, grade, size range, quantity, destination city or port and required documents; (2) our engineers confirm the correct grade and size, check GOST equivalents if needed and issue a firm offer within 24 hours; (3) after confirmation we book production on the corresponding line (15-25 days for standard items); (4) we arrange independent inspection if required and load the container or vessel with a full packing list; (5) you receive the MTC, ST-1, invoice and shipping documents by email on the day of departure, and our team tracks the cargo until it reaches your warehouse. First orders can be combined with a trial container of several product lines, and long-term partners receive preferential pricing and fixed-price contracts.
